We stopped in this really great place called Chatterbox Cafe to have some lunch. I adore the two sentries on either side of the door.It is in Pugwash. Delicious food, books and free internet....what more could a traveler ask for?
Pugwash is an interesting little place. It has a bright spot in the history books. Home to the Thinker's Lodge. Where the first of the Pugwash Conferences was held
The
first meeting, was held in 1957, here at the birthplace of the American
philanthropist Cyrus Eaton, who hosted and financed the meeting. 22
scientists from around the world attended. (seven
from the United States, three each from the Soviet Union and Japan, two
each from the United Kingdom and Canada, and one each from Australia,
Austria, China, France, and Poland).The stimulus for that gathering was a manifesto issued in 1955 by Bertrand Russell and Albert Einstein --
and signed also by Max Born, Percy Bridgman, Leopold Infeld, Frederic
Joliot-Curie, Herman Muller, Linus Pauling, Cecil Powell, Joseph
Rotblat, and Hideki Yukawa -- which called upon scientists of all
political persuasions to assemble to discuss the threat posed to
civilization by the advent of nuclear weapons . These meetings still go on today.
A basic rule is that participation is always by individuals in their
private capacity (not as representatives of governments or
organizations).
In 1995, fifty years after the bombing of Nagasaki and Hiroshima and fifty years after the signing of the Russell-Einstein Manifesto, the Pugwash Conferences and Joseph Rotblat were award ed the Nobel Peace Prize jointly. "for
their efforts to diminish the part played by nuclear arms in
international politics and, in the longer run, to eliminate such arms".
The Norwegian Nobel committee hoped that awarding the prize to Rotblat and Pugwash would"encourage world leaders to intensify their efforts to rid the world of nuclear weapons".
In his acceptance speech, Rotblat quoted a key phrase from the Manifesto:
McCain had to cancel a big event where he's visit an oil rig to explain why we should all be supporting off shore drilling. Why was it canceled? Ohh yeah there was a nearby spill that dumped hundreds of thousands of gallons into the Mississippi. Good timing ;)
I came down to the city yesterday because my city baby is sick again. He doesn't even want his grammy this time. I haven't taken any pictures so this one is from last month. I have tried growing these in the country, but haven't had much success. May have to try again.
My interview at the hospital is this afternoon. Then I will probably go home. Have to stop somewhere and look for some shutters. And pick up a few groceries.
Talked to hubby this morning. He said it is raining again. That is very unusual for us in July. As a general rule, we get very little rain in July. Bet I will have to pick beans and zucchini when I get home. Can't wait to work on the homespun quilt!
]]>Well, here it is.... my first post from the road. I'm finally learning how to use my new laptop computer. Right now I am at Morrisville College in NYS, at Quilting By the Lake (QBL). I was honored to receive a scholarship to attend a 5 day class here. It's like being a college student again for a week. We are staying in the dorms and eating in the dining hall. Wonderful food! I'm taking a class from Elizabeth Busch- Small Works. I am learning so much and having a wonderful time. I really neded to get away, and this has been just what I needed. We began on Monday, and have not used our machines yet. We have spent our time so far painting fabric. OK, anyone who keeps up with me knows that I already do a lot of paintng, but there are so many new techniques out there. More tools in the toolbox.... New ways to think about paints and fabric.
I think I'm sick. Brian even asked if I am. Your body might be a mess if you're not sure if you're sick. So tired this week and/or in pain. But we've decided I must be sick because I just keep falling asleep at normal people times, or earlier. Can't stay awake. Ugh. Fell asleep at around 8, Brian woke me up at 9 to be sure I didn't miss shot. He didn't realize I think I hadn't been asleep all day, just an hour or so. And I woke up sweating when I felt little like chills when I was falling asleep. Ugh. shot and sleepy time. Bad week health wise.
