Today is Blog Action Day! Take action by posting about the environment in your own way.
Already did it: http://dejablu503.vox.com/library/post/i-wasnt-going-to-do-the-whole-blog-action-day-thingie-because.html
Yet here I am. I guess you can blame my Critical Thinking101 class back in 1972 for this post. I am immediately suspicious of any unknown person or group(s) that think they need my email addy for me to take part in something. Think of all the PC folks out there blogging their hearts out unaware they are going to get hit with a ton of spam as a result over the next months, and they will not have a clue where it came from... I mean it IS a great way to get millions of active email addresses to sell to spammers for a nice profit or to create a fundraising hit list with very little hassle....
Anyway I registered my way using the email address udonotneedmyemail@all.com
Ha...so on to the subject at hand.... blogging for the environment....
Here too I have to write my own script, I am not into Greenpeace or the Sierra club or any of the non profits that appear to be involved in this blog action, they are already making a ton of money off of doing what is right. I learned a long time ago just because they claim to be non-profit, doesn't mean they are not making lots of money... so here's my best advice on how little old you can help the environment, no need to send me money, this is free, no strings attached advice:
1) For Gawd's sake....get rid of your SUV/Hummer/RV! I mean no one who REALLY cares about the environment should be driving something that gets 8 miles or less to the gallon, so put up or shut up. I am sick of gas guzzling drivers with save the earth stickers plastered in large numbers on their bumpers, why do these idiots not know this is hypocritical of them??? If you already drive a car that gets 27+MPG and that cries when you approach a small hill, then up the effort and ride a bike when weather allows or when the trip you are taking is short and not straight up the side of a mountain because that would suck, especially at 50+yo.
2) STOP BUYING BIG ENERGY SUCKING HOUSES... you are so busy working to pay for them that you are never home to live in them, you know it and I know it, so downsize... reclaim your life, no one I know needs over 1200sqft. of house.... most couples could get by just fine with under 900sqft no matter what HGTV tells you to the contrary. Big stick built houses cost a lot to build, a lot to heat and a lot to cool. You are not impressing the people you think you are impressing, heck- paying it off is gonna kill you... in fact I would love to see people cut themselves free of cost padding contractors and start building natural material homes themselves.... like homes made out of:
Cob
Earthbags
Cordwood
Papercrete
Must see videos:
Cob Cottage video
Natural alternative building video
Building with cob video
The art of earth video
Think of how much cooler neighborhoods would be if every house did not look the same! Energy efficient, owner built... and everyone could afford to own a home. That seems pretty darn earth friendly to me.... of course you would have to over turn a ton of building codes in place to insure that housing contractors are something you can hardly avoid, but that is do-able if people are willing to vote for changes in building codes so housing costs could get more rational and forests could flourish. Just think about the possibilities such changes would provide for everyone. And while you are at it, get serious about converting to sun or wind power, even for just part of your power needs. Start with a solar powered lamp, do something.
3) STOP CONSUMING SO DARN MUCH NEW CRAP: No one needs all those crazy kitchen and bathroom gadgets, like an electric can opener, I have never owned one... I have not died or developed CTS. Don't be such a sissy, do stuff manually and quit buying new energy dependent gadgets. For that matter quit buying new stuff as much as possible, support area thrift stores, they have great bargains, and they do great things with the money they make. Help take a penny or two out of greedy corp CEO pockets. If you buy less they will manufacture less and pollution will go down. There is no shame in buying used, you might even be able to afford a real vacation if you buy used whenever possible.... and barter, or trade what you have and do not need for something that you do need. Also freecycle whenever you can.... give what you do not need to someone who does need it and cannot afford to buy it. You'll have more space in your home, be helping someone who needs a hand and you'll have less to dust. Win/win/win.
That's it... it's pretty simple really, you just need to simply your life. Now go forth and make a difference for the environment, even a small one, no one really expected you to heal the ozone all by yourself, doing whatever you can do is better than doing nothing at all. Recycle. Make sacrifices,it will help make a difference.
Namaste
